Too Much Information:
The Annotated Mystery Science Theater 3000
"...more important than the Human Genome Project!!" -- Helper Ken Tkacs
"...more important than the international space station!" -- Helper Randy Johnson
Important Announcement: As you have all no doubt noticed, this project has stalled badly. Unfortunately, it's all gotten a bit beyond me. I have other projects on the go and have more responsibilities at work, all of which uses up chunks of my free time. Plus, even if I did work on TMI to the exclusion of all other leisure activites, I'd still never get it done. It's too much for any one person. Which brings me to my back-up plan...
A wiki. Something all MiSTies can contribute to. I know the Digital Archive Project already has something a little along those lines, but I think the actual wiki format has a lot of potential. I would regret loosing my own distinctive "voice", but whatchagonnado? This is something I wouldn't get started for at least a couple more months right now, but would like to see how folks feel about it. Drop me a line at dascott@highspeedplus.com and let me know how you feel about this. In the meantime, you can all ignore my little cries for "Help!" scattered throughout the pages, as I won't be doing anything with that information for the time being.
These pages will stay up because, well, I put a lot of work into them! And they can still be used, anyway. I will also keep the mailing list active for the time being, perhaps now as a place to discuss ideas for a potential wiki.
Thanks for the support you have all shown me over the years. I hope that this is not truly the end of the project, just a stop along the way.
Have you ever watched an episode of MST3K and just not gotten a joke? Maybe someone refers to an actor you've never heard of or a product you've never seen. Or possibly there is a reference specific to one region and, unless you're a local, it looses something. Sometimes, you might even know what's being referred to but not how it relates to what's happening in the film?
Really? Happens to me all the time...
Well, if is has happened to you, help is here! I've decided to take on the massive task of trying to explain all the cultural references in MST3K.
This project was inspired, in part, by the now apparently defunct Complete Mystery Science Theater 3000 Reference Guide, to which I had contributed. After it went away, I decided to try it for myself (fool that I am). I hope nobody minds too much if I borrow some information from there.
Keep in mind that this will probably never be a complete project. I anticipate it will the rest of my life to just get copies of all the episodes, let alone fully annotate them. I'm mostly doing this in my spare time.
But remember that you can help. Feel free to mail me with new or corrected information or just to point out spelling error, out of date info or dead links. When I have had trouble with a specific reference, I have asked for "Help!" with an e-mail link.
If you do help, and are the first to supply me with specific information, you get to be listed on the Helpers page! The honour is greatly coveted. By whom, I don't know, though. (Previous Helpers, please visit the page for a small announcement.)
Searchable! Wondering if your favourite TV show, film, actor, singer or whatever gets mentioned on MST? Is there in fact a "Star Trek" reference in every single episode? Just want to search for all the stuff I need help with? Or just feel like typing a word in at random and see where it turns up? Well, now you can! You lucky people, you!
